Keeping the Line: Targeted Repairs Extend Life of Norrsundhamn Breakwaters
Tucked along Sweden’s eastern coastline, the small port of Norrsundhamn plays an outsized role in local commerce—serving fishing vessels, small cargo, and seasonal ferries. But after years of service, its ageing stone breakwaters were showing signs of distress: dislodged armour stones, scouring at the base, and ice damage from repeated harsh winters.
That’s where we came in.
At Coastal Structures, we were commissioned to carry out a targeted maintenance strategy that preserved the breakwaters without requiring full reconstruction—saving both time and budget for the municipality.
The Challenge
- Frequent ice loading had shifted core materials and caused minor settlement
- Wave overtopping was beginning to erode the land-side of the structure
- Limited funding demanded a cost-effective solution that avoided full rebuild
The Solution
Working in close coordination with port engineers and local contractors, we implemented a three-phase repair plan:
- Condition Mapping
We conducted drone-assisted visual surveys and underwater inspections to create a detailed damage profile—essential for targeting high-risk sections. - Stabilisation and Reinforcement
Displaced stones were re-set, and additional rock armour was installed in vulnerable zones. A geotextile layer was also added to mitigate future scour and seepage. - Ice Resilience Upgrades
To reduce seasonal damage, we introduced sloped outer faces and ice-breaking contours—small changes that yield big long-term benefits in northern ports.
The Result
- 25% increase in wave energy deflection, verified by post-project monitoring
- Projected structural lifespan extended by 15–20 years
- Zero unplanned closures during the following winter season
